FRINGE AND FRINGE ABILITY by Paul Bonin-Rodriguez

Fri. – Sun. @ 8 PM
April 14 – 16, 2006

Jump-Start Performance Co. presents FRINGE AND FRINGE ABILITY, written and performed by Paul Bonin-Rodriguez.  Third time’s the charm as writer/performer Bonin-Rodriguez reunites us with John Hobson, whose dreams of tasteful loft-living and man-man love in Chicago are stalled when the call of family brings him back to his small Texas hometown.  Taking place on the eve of the Iraq war, this show finds a blue state of mind taking control of itself and others during a red state of emergency. San Antonio audiences will be seeing brand-new material in the second act of the show, which premiered at Jump-Start last year. Directed by Steve Bailey, this version of Fringe and Fringe Ability comes with two acts, multiple characters and a virtuosic solo performance. This show is part of the Electric Performance Lab series. For more information and to make reservations call 210-227-5867.

Paul Bonin-Rodriguez is back from a hiatus as a doctoral candidate in the Performance as a Public Practice Program at the University of Texas at Austin. Paul is an acclaimed writer-performer and Jump-Start Performance Co. member who has toured nationally since the creation of his first works, Talk of the Town (1992), The Bible Belt and Other Accessories (1993), and Love in the Time of College (1994), which collectively known as The Texas Trinity.  In serialized, narrative form Paul presented the hilarious and poignant coming-of-age and coming out of John Roy Hobson, the irrepressible small-town sissy boy hailed as "a gay Huck Finn."  Over the years, he has created and co-created a dozen shows at Jump-Start, including The Great Chittlin' Debate and Katherine's Joint (with Kitty Williams), Quinceañera (with Michael Marinez and Beto Araiza), and Memory’s Caretaker.

The Electric Performance Lab is a project that features original productions that are taken through various stages of development. Audience members answer the artists’ questions about their shows through surveys and post-show facilitated discussions.

This show will be performed at Jump-Start Theater, located on the corner of South Alamo and Probandt, in the Blue Star Arts Complex. Tickets are $12 and $9 (students and seniors); members receive a 50% discount on tickets.
