W-I-P Crème will fill you up with a delicious evening of polished work! We depart from the usual format of laboratory-style performances and feedback to celebrate the best that local and local-area artists have created through our unique and highly regarded process. The program will be followed by a tasty post-show reception of finger foods and the opportunity to meet the performers.

W-I-P (Works-In-Progress/Wednesdays-In-Performance) is a long-running collaboration between Jump-Start Performance Co. and San Antonio Dance Umbrella. It is a monthly lab space for new, in-progress dance and other movement-based performance works accompanied by a facilitated post-performance discussion. W-I-P is known for its eclecticism: modern dancers, belly dancers and performance artists have performed in the same evening and been inspired by each other, as well as expanding the audience’s perception of performance.

Be a part of the magic that is happening at Jump-Start Performance Co. this summer as our fabulous Summer Intern!

This paid internship position ($3500 for 10 weeks) will be focused on assistance with summer productions and programming.  Interns will assume stage management, technical assistant and/or production assistant duties for summer productions, will assist with house management, box office & front of house duties.  Video and photo documentation work will also be assigned to production assistants. Hours will be flexible and vary from day to day and will include some weekend and evening work.

An Evening with the Jazz Poets of San Antonio

Join us for a chill evening of poetry and live music featuring  Poet Laureate of San Antonio Carmen Tafolla, Eduardo C. Garza, Abel Salas, Roberto Vargas, Martha Tavera, Ray Z., Maria De Leon, Anastacio Palomo, Anthony the Poet, Amanda Flores, Brian Mata, Black Butterfly, Mario Gutierrez, The Poet Bob, Rohn Bayes, Elonifer Skyhawk, Patrizia Ortiz, Gomez, Erin Boldt, Rogelio Smiley Rojas, Zakiyah, Joyous Windwrider and others.

Following the Jazz Poets’ showcase, the evening switches to an open mic format where you can present your own poem with the improvisational skills of the Jazz Poetry Band, featuring Efrain Garza on keyboards, Carl “Crush” Rush on bass, Eduardo C. Garza on drums, trombone, and flute, Gus Alejos on percussion and C J Troilo on guitar.

Hetaerae
A new theatre ritual by Laurie Rae Dietrich

The theater is a church. The bordello is a temple. The sacred has been profaned and the profane is, in fact, sacred. In Hetaerae (n. pl. [hi-teer-ee], gr; courtesans), writer, ritualist and performance artist Laurie Dietrich explores the archetype of the sacred prostitute: the ways in which both the performer & the sex worker are extensions of the divine. This provocative and profound new multi-media work fuses religious & sexual fetish imagery, Sumerian mythology, pole dance, stripping & Goddess iconography to create a new theatrical piece addressing the most demeaned and reductive stereotypes we have collectively created about women.

The diverse female cast will excavate and embody the roles that women have inhabited, across the span of human history, in a series of linked text/movement-based vignettes, re-awakening and reclaiming the connection between what we desire and what we despise, and attempting to heal the violent separation of sacred and scapegoat.

Shockingly current and rooted in deep history, Hetaerae is Dietrich’s first full-length, fully-realized ritual theater production, and is supported by a talented production team and cast.
