Hetaerae
A new theatre ritual by Laurie Rae Dietrich
With Erik Bosse & Sandra Dunn

April 12 – 21, 2013
Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m.

Admission: $15 general admission, $12 students & seniors, group rate available for groups of 10 or more.

The theater is a church. The bordello is a temple. The sacred has been profaned and the profane is, in fact, sacred. In Hetaerae (n. pl. [hi-teer-ee], gr; courtesans), writer, ritualist and performance artist Laurie Dietrich explores the archetype of the sacred prostitute: the ways in which both the performer & the sex worker are extensions of the divine. This provocative and profound new multi-media work fuses religious & sexual fetish imagery, Sumerian mythology, pole dance, stripping & Goddess iconography to create a new theatrical piece addressing the most demeaned and reductive stereotypes we have collectively created about women.

The diverse female cast will excavate and embody the roles that women have inhabited, across the span of human history, in a series of linked text/movement-based vignettes, re-awakening and reclaiming the connection between what we desire and what we despise, and attempting to heal the violent separation of sacred and scapegoat.

Shockingly current and rooted in deep history, Hetaerae is Dietrich’s first full-length, fully-realized ritual theater production, and is supported by a talented production team and cast.

Performed by Laurie Dietrich, Monessa Esquivel, Brandyn Miller and S.T. Shimi.

Twitter Row: Tweeting, updating your Facebook or text messaging during shows is usually looked down upon, but we encourage it! Excited by what you see on stage and want to share it with your social network? The back row of the theater has been dedicated for the patron who can’t put their phone down. Help us grow our audiences by talking about the work we’re doing. #TwitterRow #hetaerae #JSPC

For more info or to purchase tickets for Hetaerae please call (210) 227-5867!

W-I-P (Works-In-Progress/Wednesdays-In-Performance) is a long-running collaboration between Jump-Start Performance Co. and San Antonio Dance Umbrella. It is a monthly lab space for new, in-progress dance and other movement-based performance works accompanied by a facilitated post-performance discussion. W-I-P is known for its eclecticism: modern dancers, belly dancers and performance artists have performed in the same evening and been inspired by each other, as well as expanding the audience’s perception of performance.

Jump-Start Performance Co. is generously supported by the Department for Culture and Creative Development, Kronkosky Charitable Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and theFund.

The San Antonio Dance Umbrella is funded in part by the Office of Cultural Affairs, the Texas Commission on the Arts and by its members who represent the best in the San Antonio Dance Community.
