Named one of San Antonio’s Best Shows of 2010, I’ll Remember For You by Lisa Suárez is a bilingual theater production depicting a Mexican-American woman’s experiences, feelings and thoughts surrounding her mother’s dementia and memory loss. In this courageous, deeply personal and unsentimental look at the role of the caregiver in this growing epidemic, Suárez brings her own life with her aging mother to the stage. She writes about – and portrays – her mother with humor and respect, love and frustration, fear, sadness and celebration.

I’ll Remember For You is a very private look at an increasingly public dynamic. As medical science enables us to live longer, perhaps money ear-marked for research into a “cure” for aging-related dementia could be better spent on support infrastructure for the afflicted and their caregivers… who will be us.

November 5, 2011
7 p.m.

At the Sterling Houston Theater at Jump-Start

Divadlo z Pazaje is a ground-breaking theatre ensemble from the Slovak Republic comprised of performers with developmental disabilities who work with incredible discipline & focus to create original, visually striking performances. They first toured “Protected Territory” to the United States in 2009 in collaboration with Jump-Start Performance Co. This absorbing & heartwarming documentary captures both the production and the performers’ experience of being in the United States for the first time, including San Antonio. Lyrical, moving and very human, Protected Territory is a cross-cultural film not to be missed.

There will be a post-show discussion with the staff & performers. Tickets are also available for the new collaboration between Divadlo & Jump-Start, “Stranger”. Visit www.jump-start.org for more information.

Jump-Start Performance Co. is a 27 year-old theatre company that specializes in cutting-edge, original work in multiple genres, and in arts education. An ensemble of performance/visual/media artists create and collaborate on individual and group pieces, including work with nationally- and internationally-known guest artists such as Robert Karimi, Guillermo Gomez-Pena and Sandra Cisneros. Since 1985, Jump-Start has created, produced or presented over 500 original performance works, reaching an audience of nearly one million people.

A relationship that began in 2009 with cultural exchanges & a United States tour for Divadlo’s original play “Protected Territory” has developed into a truly intercultural experience, with artists from both theatres and from two different parts of the world collaborating on this richly visual piece that utilizes cultural symbolism, text in multiple languages & highly physical theater.

“Stranger” is about the Other in all of us. It is about the innocence that we have lost, and about the unknown that we discover day by day. The biblical characters of Salome, Herod, Adam and Eve, as well as a surprise dinner guest, are inserted into a fantastical situation while current events resonate in the background and permeate the words and actions onstage. “Stranger” compellingly explores the topics of sins & virtues, unity, marginalization and the universal patterns of human behavior in everything we do. Our future depends on us. Are we ready to invite the Stranger in… ?

Our popular Windows Series is back! Watch one-of-a-kind performance installations staged in our front window from the alley in front of the theater. To kick off the season, Jump-Start Performance Co. is linking up with long-time friend and associate artist Manuel “Cros” Esquivel to bring you a Window like you’ve never seen before.

See Boom Box Car and step into the world of an artist who risks everything to transcend the limitations of place… sending his art out, by rail, to cities he’ll never see. An original hip-hop soundscape sets the tone as we spy on something that always and only happens in secret… one of the oldest and most dangerous sub-genres of hip-hop culture. A masterpiece unfolds as our artist rushes to complete his work before being discovered by those who guard the rusted metal boxes that, for him, are a blank canvas… and an opportunity…

When all you want the world to know is that you were here, you are willing to risk life, limb and freedom to leave your mark.
