This popular site-specific series based on an original concept by Kim Corbin and Sandra Dunn returns with brand-new works in the front windows of Jump-Start Theater. This season, four different Jump-Start artists create one-night only performance/multi-media installations that are meant to be viewed from outside the theater.

PUBLICLY AVAILABLE KNOWLEDGE combines real-time audio from LiveJournal entries on the internet with video of electronic billboards from around the San Antonio area to create a kaleidoscope of extravagant and poignant beauty. The artist will be inviting viewers to comment on the work on-site…

ONLY TWO PERFORMANCES:

September 6 & 7, 2008
Saturday and Sunday at 8:00 p.m.

A play by San Antonio playwright Gregg Barrios about the short-lived but intense relationship between playwright Tennessee Williams and south Texan Pancho Rodriguez. They met on the Texas-Mexico border in 1946 when Williams was returning from a trip to Mexico. Pancho and Williams lived in the French Quarter of New Orleans together. Williams was writing “A Streetcar Named Desire” during this period, and used his relationship with the volatile Pancho as a model for the character of Stanley Kowalski and his relationship with both Blanche and Stella. In 1947, Pancho was replaced in Williams’ affections by Frank Merlo, but they maintained contact until the playwright’s death in 1983. Co-commissioned with the Classic Theatre of San Antonio.

Playwright Gregg Barrios has discovered previously unknown correspondence between Williams and Pancho, some of which is included in the play, and received pictures from Pancho and his brother in New Orleans. Barrios chose the name of the play from the fact that Williams dubbed their home together “Rancho Pancho,” wherever they happened to be living.

Directed by Diane Malone. Cast includes Benny Briseno as Pancho, Rick Frederick as Tennessee Williams, Anna Gangai as Carson McCullers, and Annella Keys as Margo Jones.

Ticket prices are $12 general admission, $9 students, military & seniors.
Groups of ten or more are $7 per person.
Jump-Start members receive a 50% discount on tickets. Please call 210-227-JUMP (5867) to make reservations.

If you like the film “Kingdom Come,” you’ll love the play it’s based on…

In the Baptist backwoods of the Bible Belt, the beleaguered Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father’s funeral, the Turpin’s other problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion: Firstborn Ray-Bud drinks himself silly as the funeral bills mount; Junior, the younger son, is juggling financial ruin, a pack of no-neck monster kids, and a wife who suspects him of infidelity in the family car; their spinster sister, Delightful, copes with death as she does life, by devouring junk food; and all the neighbors add more than two cents. As the situation becomes fraught with mishap, Ray-Bud says to his long-suffering wife, “When I die, don’t tell nobody. Just bury me in the backyard and tell everybody I left you.” Amidst the chaos, the Turpins turn for comfort to their friends and neighbors, an eccentric community of misfits who just manage to pull together and help each other through their hours of need, and finally, the funeral.

“Women’s Insights: The Dual Nature of the Female Soul” is an art project by Raquel Beechner dealing with the four seasons of a woman’s life focusing on the way women feel, and the way women instinctually live their life cycles in their own unique and creative way.

The live performance piece that accompanies this exhibition will consist of writings and drawings that bring out the story of the tamed and unbridled woman archetype behind the visual images she creates. The writings were based on many interviews of women of all ages throughout the nation. Their collective voice is narrated as the artist dances on sand while drawing the symbols present within her art.

A charming, funny look at growing up gay in South Texas, Trippin’ to Momma’s charts the ever-changing relationship between Henry, a momma’s boy, and Garry, who is out of the closet and recovering from a bad relationship. The action of the play is confined to the car, always on a journey either to or from Momma’s, spanning over a decade. As with any long road trip, there are munchies, music and lots to talk about as the scenery changes, the years pass and the boys mature. Hop in the car with the guys and fasten your seatbelts – it’s going to be a fierce and fabulous ride!

Writer Chuck Squier & director /designer Robert Rehm team up again on this fun show. Featuring Billy Muñoz & Daniel Jackson. Part of the Electric Performance Lab. There will be a discussion with the artists after the performances on both Saturdays: June 14 and 21.

PRICES: $12 general admission, $9 students, military & seniors.
Groups of ten or more are $7 per person.
The program runs about an hour and a half. No reservations; please purchase at the door. Please note that we will accept cash & checks only; no credit cards.

W-I-P Créme was conceived as a celebratory conclusion to San Antonio’s Dance Month and is a full-length evening of selected original dance and performance art works from the current W-I-P season. The performances will showcase the diversity and creativity of local dance and performance makers. The line-up will feature Gabriel Zertuche (ballet), Palo Alto College/Aaron Salas (modern), Alana Ouazanni (bellydance fusion), Fandango (folkloric), Alamotion (jazz-funk), S.T.Shimi (aerial dance), Maria Ibarra / Nicolas Valdez (performance poetry), Verge Dance Co. (Austin based contemporary dance), Paula Cruz (Contemporary) and Sirocco Dance Co. (American Tribal Style Belly Dance).

W-I-P (Works-In-Progress/Wednesdays-In-Performance) is a collaboration between Jump-Start Performance Co. and San Antonio Dance Umbrella. It is a monthly lab space for new, in-progress dance and other movement-based performance works accompanied by a facilitated post-performance discussion. W-I-P is known for its eclecticism: modern dancers, belly dancers and performance artists have performed in the same evening and been inspired by each other, as well as expanding the audience’s perception of performance.

Jump-Start Performance Co. is funded in part by grants from The Department of Arts and Cultural Affairs, City of San Antonio, The Texas Commission on the Arts, and The National Endowment of the Arts.

San Antonio Dance Umbrella is funded in part by grants from The Deprtament of Arts & Cultural Affairs, Boeing Foundation and the City of San Antonio.
