The Macondo Foundation and Jump-Start present Nuevo Mundo, an evening of readings and performances by renowned writers Leslie Marmon Silko and Elena Poniatowska, hosted by Sandra Cisneros. In this new millennium, far-flung communities are coming into contact and creating something new. From this fusion and confusion arise flourishing hybrids, a time of intense creation and a new mestizaje. These writers blend history and visionary thinking in an evening that will challenge and amaze.

July – Caitlin Jones
Opening on July 1, 2010 | 6 – 8 p.m.

About the artist:
Caitlin Jones is a painter and photographer from San Antonio Texas, who graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with Bachelors in Psychology and Art. Throughout her life Caitlin had a passion for photography, but her love of painting was recently discovered, while studying at UTSA. Paintings, by Caitlin, have been shown in group shows at UTSA including the 24th and 25th annual student art show, and the UTSA student show.

She uses a variety of media in her work, such as sand and spray paint, as well as utilizing various paint application techniques including spray bottles, to create visually striking pieces of work that are abstracted from reality. Because of her love for photography Caitlin focuses on trying to capture the essence of photography in her work, through the creation of instances and moments in her work, much like that of a photograph.

Pylsur með ollu og freska
(Hotdog with everything and a Fresca)
Opening on August 5, 2010 | 6 – 8 p.m.
Block Party with DJ C. S. Bryant
on First Friday, August 6, 2010 | 7 – 10 p.m.

From the artist:
I knew how much of an impact traveling to Iceland would have on my life but I had no idea how it would impact my painting. Although I’ve focused on abstract throughout my painting career, I’ve always felt the need to add some illustrative or concrete idea to the canvas so that my audience had something to hold on to.

The images that have been created because of my opportunity to travel have become my concrete ideas. Every time I look at them I’m transposed back to such a magical place.

The title of the show is how you order a hot dog with everything and a
Fresca. It became our favorite snack everyday. ”A hot dog costs 280 ISK (as of December 2009) and condiments include ketchup, sweet mustard, fried onion, rawonion and remolaði , a mayonnaise-based sauce with sweet relish.

Hot dogs are often ordered with “the works,” i.e., all condiments, or in Icelandic ’eina með öllu.”

PAINTING BY BRENT F. WIDEN

MARCH 4th – 29th, 2010.

Brent Widen was born and raised in Chicago, where he froze his ass off waiting for the “L” train for over a quarter century. He emerged Magna Cum Laude in Fine Arts from The University of Chicago with barely some remnant of common sense and the ability to enjoy the study of American Civics & History still intact. In 1988, having ventured on an impromptu sleepless road trip to San Antonio with an Alamo Heights expatriate waitressing in a Lincoln Avenue Hofbrau House, Brent caught a glimpse of the Southtown Riverwalk at the end of Beauregard Street and summarily decided to stay.

In 1995, he persuaded Ben Wong to sell the Historic Wong Grocery Company Building (ca. 1901) with 56 years of Chinese – American fixtures, product, junk, text, ceramic shards, paper-clips, used & stored dental-floss, dried food and terrifying meat-cutting saws and knives packed like refugee baggage inside. The painted doors and windows in this exhibition are salvage from that holy place. These objects were appropriated into Brent’s continuous endeavor of art-overwork with the implicit permission of Grandma Wong, whose ever-mumbling ghost inhabits the premises to this day.

This is Brent’s 3rd exhibition at Jump-Start Art Gallery, a fact that attests to their commitment to tolerance and cultural diversity and for which he is sincerely grateful. The first: Moses, Mezuzahs and Other Judaica from the Infinito Botanica (Festival de Libre Enganche, 1995) and the second: Six Days – A Temporary Mural (2003) were monster hits among his friends and then quickly forgotten.
