Dive into a delicious celebration of new work!

WIP Crème will feature 6-8 artists performing short works that range
from theatre to contemporary to hip-hop, amongst other genres. It showcases
outstanding artists from the past season of W-I-P and is a pure
celebration ! No Critical Response to follow…this will be a full-length evening of completed work. The performance will be followed by a tasty reception with wine and pastries. All this for the affordable price of
$10!

W-I-P Crème will be on Wednesday, May 27th at 7p.m. at Jump-Start
Theater in the Blue Star Arts Complex, corner of S. Alamo & Probandt.

half. No reservations are necessary but seats are limited!

W-I-P (Works-In-Progress/Wednesdays-In-Performance) is a
collaboration between Jump-Start Performance Co. and San Antonio Dance
Umbrella. It is a monthly lab space for new, in-progress dance and
other movement-based performance works accompanied by a facilitated
post-performance discussion. W-I-P is known for its eclecticism:
modern dancers, belly dancers and performance artists have performed
in the same evening and been inspired by each other, as well as
expanding the audience’s perception of performance.

For W-I-P Crème, we have selected some of our favourites from the
past. The line-up will include Alegria Dance Company, Spareworks, Alana Ouzzani & Karen Barbee, Dino Foxx, Alamotion, PAC Dance, and Alli Hrncir.

As part of their first-ever U.S. tour, Divadlo z Pasaze (Theatre from the Passage) from the Slovak Republic will bring their original performance Chranene Uzemie (Protected Terrritory) to San Antonio. Ensemble members of the theatre are individuals with mental challenges and profound learning disabilities recruited from Slovak state mental institutions. In addition to performances, the company will conduct residency activities with community groups.

On any given morning in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, fourteen staff members and fifteen actors arrive at Divadlo z Pasaze (Theatre from the Passage) by eight o’clock in the morning. Together, they hold a tea ceremony. Then they continue to classes, rehearsals, a shared lunch, afternoon workshops, field trips or performances. Throughout the company’s twelve years, what remains constant is their routine: they work, learn, create, eat and – for some – live together. The life and work in the theatre is dynamic, changing, creative, vivid and cheerful.

Chranene Uzemie (Protected Territory) is a nonverbal performance piece, using music and movement as the main communication channels.

During opening night Friday, May 1, 2009, there will be an exclusive printmaking performance by Raul and his friends demonstrating an original method of relief printmaking never seen before in the world of printmaking. This unique method created by Raul incorporates the use of a large carpet and foam pad that is worked on with special fabric printing ink using an industrial grade carpet cleaner. The entire printmaking process will be performed twice for the audience to enjoy on the outside landing of the Jump-Start Theatre.

Bellydance for Fun and Fitness here at Jump-Start Theater! Get your week started off right. Join S.T.Shimi for an hour of user-friendly bellydance fitness with great music, humor and even a little choreography at the end.

All classes are ongoing so you can start at any time!

Please bring a check ( made out to Sirocco Studio) or exact change for $40. Come a little after 7 p.m. if you can if you are new so that we can fill out paperwork.

Location:
You will be entering through the back end of Jump-Start Theater. The front door will most likely be locked! Back Classroom of Jump-Start Theater in the Blue Star Arts Complex (Park in the front of the Complex and take the side alley next to Joe Blue’s, turn right and you’ll see the Sirocco Dance sign on the door. It’s also right across from Guardian Angel Academy)

What to Wear:
First, a smile. Come to class prepared to have fun! No one is ever made to feel bad or awkward. Wear comfortable clothes that are not too loose so you can see the moves on your body. As an instructor, I prefer students to wear leggings or pants just so I can see if their knees and legs are in the proper posture, but this is not mandatory. If you have a simple hip wrap (even a big shawl), it will help you find your hips and see the hip movements we do. If you not are comfortable showing your midriff, I suggest you wear a tank top or close-fitting t-shirt. You will also be in either bare feet or socks. No one will be in costume, promise!

Come and watch the drama unfold as Graham Toms, an Irish artist living in Texas, gives life to Don Quixote. Using black ink and Japanese sumi-e style brushes Toms will visually animate the story of Don Quixote before a live audience at the Jump-Start Theatre while Raquel Beechner, a San Antonio bilingual performing artist, narrates an abridged version of the tale.

Graham Toms family roots originate in County Down, Ireland. His first introduction to art came from an uncle who pursued painting as a hobby and encouraged Toms to paint. As part of his formal studies Toms attended the University of Ulster in Belfast, where he obtained his bachelor of arts majoring in illustration and animation. After graduating and working as an animator and illustrator for a time in Ireland, he accepted a position at the Disney Institute in Orlando, Fla. in 1995. Moving to the United States with his wife Helen, he taught animation at the Institute for five years and assisted with development of curriculum for their animation classes.

The Alamo City only gets bigger and stranger in the near future. Take a sneak peek at our city as it stands in the year 2068. In The Case of The Neon Twins, we follow Detective Franco as he wades through a multimedia, future-noir production unlike anything we’ve ever seen. It’s his most troublesome case yet- a beautiful stranger with a missing sister, a vixen with an ugly secret, a mysterious & meddling über-corporation and missing pieces of his memory. Can he crack this before time runs out?

Comic-book styling meets fierce stage performance in this new full-length play. Written by Billy Munoz & Daniel Jackson, featuring Monessa Esquivel, S.T.Shimi, and Joel Settles. Directed by Dave Robb.

This production is a part of the Electric Performance Lab, a project in it’s fourth year, funded by the City of San Antonio & the Kronkosky Foundation. It features original company productions that are in various stages of development. All audiences are invited to fill out surveys to assist with the further development of Electric Performance Lab shows.

King William Fair Parade 2009

Jump-Start Performance Co. is proud to be Co-Grand Marshall of the King William Parade. Jump-Start will be kicking off this year’s parade (along with the Magik Children’s Theater) with a fierce and fabulous float! Come out and support Jump-Start as they take their unique style of performance art to the streets of King William with a vintage circus performance! Glittery signs in the crowd will be greatly appreciated!

The King William Fair kicks off with a fun and funky Parade. The Parade offers local organizations and businesses the opportunity to showcase their festive side. Look for parodies of the bigger Fiesta parades.
