Every summer, Jump-Start Performance Co. and Sandra Cisneros’ Macondo Writers’ Workshop team up to host an amazing evening of hot readings, live entertainment and cool refreshments to beat the Texas heat. This annual event is directly tied to Sandra’s Macondo Writers’ Workshop for Latino writers from around the country.
The featured guest for this year’s event is Dorothy Allison, award winning North Carolina author (Bastard Out of Carolina, Cavedweller, Trash). Allison received mainstream recognition with her novel Bastard Out of Carolina, (1992) a finalist for the 1992 National Book Award. The novel won the Ferro Grumley prize, an ALA Award for Lesbian and Gay Writing, became a best seller and an award-winning movie and has been translated into more than a dozen languages.
It will be an unforgettable, southern-tinged evening of storytelling, live music and theatrical performance. There will be readings by Allison, an introduction by Sandra Cisneros (Caramelo) and a special musical jam featuring Baldemar Velasquez, Rudy Lopez and Chris Robles. Jump-Start Company members Kim Corbin, Sandy Dunn, Monessa Esquivel and Annele Spector will do a performance adaptation of a section from Two or Three Things I Know for Sure. Danielle King will emcee, and will also sing a duet with Kevin Evans. Lisa Suarez will sing a Patsy Cline number, and to top it all off, The Fire On the Mountain Cloggers will be here too!
Tickets are $25 for general seating and $50 for table seating, drinks and snacks. All proceeds benefit Jump-Start’s educational and artistic programming. It’ll be more fun than a tent revival!
