In 2004, noted playwright, composer, and author Sterling Houston was commissioned to take part in a project centered on the history of the City Cemetery #1 located in San Antonio’s near Eastside. This long-neglected site contained the tombs, graves, and mausoleums of thousands of citizens both prominent and obscure that have influenced this colorful and remarkable city. Texas luminaries like Adina De Zavala, Clara Driscoll, and Samuel Maverick amongst others, are given voice in Houston’s inimitable blend of satire, pathos and pure poetry. In the vein of his earlier plays (High Yello Rose, Santo Negro, and Cameoland), Houston gives his characters the opportunity to support and contradict each other through text and song as they take the audience on a charming yet complicated trip through San Antonio’s fascinating past.
